Complete Resolution Guide
YouTube Thumbnail Resolutions & Dimensions
Detailed breakdown of YouTube video thumbnail resolutions, image endpoints, aspect ratio variations, and YouTube Studio technical recommendations.
Supported YouTube Thumbnail Resolutions
YouTube automatically produces several standardized thumbnail versions for each video. Here is what each format means in terms of dimensions, aspect ratio, and CDN availability.
| Quality Tier | Dimensions | Aspect Ratio | CDN Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
HD (High Definition)Top Native | 1280 × 720 | 16:9 | When available |
Full HD | 1920 × 1080 | 16:9 | Only when genuinely available |
4K UHD | 3840 × 2160 | 16:9 | Only when genuinely available |
SD (Standard Definition) | 640 × 480 | 4:3 | When available |
HQ (High Quality) | 480 × 360 | 4:3 | When available |
MQ (Medium Quality) | 320 × 180 | 16:9 | When available |
Default (Low Resolution) | 120 × 90 | 4:3 | Always available |
Important Note on 1080p and 4K Claims:
YouTube does not provide every resolution for every video. Standard thumbnail endpoints generally provide images up to 1280 × 720 (maxresdefault). Services advertising guaranteed native 1080p or 4K thumbnail downloads are usually either upscaling a 720p image with artificial sharpening or misleading users. We strictly display actual available source images without dishonest upscaling.
Understanding Each Quality Tier
maxresdefault.jpg (HD 720p)
Native CDN AssetThe highest native resolution served by YouTube public image CDN. It matches YouTube Studio official recommended thumbnail upload resolution (1280×720). If a creator uploaded a high-resolution custom thumbnail, this file is available with optimal sharpness and zero letterboxing.
1080p & 4K UHD Claims
Not Hosted by YouTubeYouTube downsamples all uploaded custom thumbnails to 1280×720 on its public media endpoints. No standard YouTube endpoint hosts native 1080p or 4K files. Any third-party tool claiming "native 4K thumbnail downloads" is artificially upscaling the 720p image.
sddefault.jpg (SD 480p)
Native CDN AssetStandard Definition fallback. Because this file uses a 4:3 canvas, YouTube embeds black horizontal letterbox bars on the top and bottom if the creator uploaded a standard 16:9 thumbnail.
hqdefault.jpg (HQ 360p)
Native CDN AssetHigh Quality legacy tier. Like sddefault, this format is encoded on a 4:3 canvas with black bars on widescreen videos. It is available on almost 100% of all public YouTube videos regardless of age.
mqdefault.jpg (MQ 180p)
Native CDN AssetMedium Quality thumbnail. Unlike the 4:3 SD/HQ versions, mqdefault is encoded in true 16:9 widescreen format without black letterboxing bars. It is lightweight (~8KB to ~15KB) and ideal for grid listings.
default.jpg (90p)
Native CDN AssetThe smallest standard thumbnail generated by YouTube. Often utilized for small search preview widgets, notification previews, and legacy feature phones.
